Our History - Literacy Volunteers -
Stamford/Greenwich, Inc. (LVSG) opened its doors in 1974 with a part-time
director, ten students and ten volunteer tutors. Since then the
organization has evolved into one of the leading providers of educational
programs for young adults, adults and families in lower Fairfield County.
Today we aspire to teach our students the skills necessary to adapt and
prosper in a global economy. We do this through a variety of initiatives
including job training and work preparation, financial literacy education,
English language classes, and transition services that help students
prepare for post-secondary education. Thanks to over 100 dedicated
volunteer tutors, more than 550 students annually have the opportunity to
return to school, pursue an education, and obtain employment.
LVSG is proud to be an accredited affiliate of
ProLiteracy. Based on students' achievements, LVSG is the top-performing
volunteer-based adult education program in Connecticut and is ranked among
the top five percent in the nation.
Our Accountability
At
Literacy Volunteers we have a responsibility to donors, the community,
students and tutors, to ensure that the resources entrusted to us produce
the greatest measurable impact on the people who utilize our services.
LVSG incorporates evidence-based instructional practices to achieve
positive student outcomes. It administers the CASAS standardized test to
all students. Achievement data is reported to the CT State Education
Department. Our students meet and exceed the standards set by the
Department and the federal government. Valid and reliable data is the
cornerstone for program growth and development.
