Our Programs

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
There are 4 levels of instruction, ranging from beginning to intermediate levels. Content includes speaking, listening, reading and writing with an emphasis on practicing communication needed for daily life at work.

Adult Basic Education (ABE)
Classes teach reading, writing and workplace skills to adults who are assessed at the beginning through intermediate levels in reading. Students may be native or non-native speakers of English.

Microsoft Elevate America
Literacy Volunteers and FSW Bridgeport are recipients of the prestigious Microsoft Elevate America Grant. The program will prepare lower income women of careers in technology.

EL/Civics - Project LIFTT (Literacy Involvement for Today and Tomorrow)
Funded by CT State Department of Education, the program integrates English language learning within the context of United States history and government, community resources, and the naturalization process.

WIRED (Workforce Innovations in Regional Economic Development)
WIRED is an initiative of the United States Department of Labor that prepares America's workforce for high-skilled, high-wage job opportunities. LVSG and FSW Bridgeport provide job training for young adults. Students obtain certification in information technology and retail services.

Bridges to Success
The program prepares students for success in post-secondary education and job training programs. Students create resumes, practice interview techniques and apply for jobs and internships.

Financial Literacy
Funded by First County Bank, SMART with Money provides financial literacy education to low to moderate income adults. The program helps students gain the knowledge they need to make informed financial decisions, avoid the pitfalls of predatory lenders and achieve economic independence.

Project CAFÉ (Computers are for Everyone)
Thanks to IBM's generous donation of new computers and software, LVSG teaches students computer applications.

Reach Out and Read (ROR)
LVSG promotes early literacy in collaboration with the ROR national program. Health care providers discuss with parents the importance of reading to their children. New and gently used books are distributed to clinics for children to take home free of charge and volunteers read to children in clinic waiting rooms.
