Join our group of over 100 dedicated volunteer tutors who teach American and foreign born students the literacy, language, and workplace skills needed to succeed in the 21st Century. Tutoring Opportunities
ESOL (English for Speaker of Other Languages)
Teach foreign born students the speaking, listening, reading, writing and workplace skills necessary for improving communication in daily life and on the job.
Adult Basic Education (ABE)
Teach reading, writing and workplace skills to adults who are assessed at the beginning through intermediate levels in reading. Students may be native or non-native speakers of English.
Writing Workshop
Teach students the fundamentals of writing by practicing meaningful formats such as filling out job applications, writing resumes, taking phone messages and composing personal narratives and essays. Prepare students to transition to job-training and post-secondary education programs.
Financial Literacy
Teach students how to make informed monetary decisions, utilize the services of financial institutions, avoid the pitfalls of predatory businesses and lenders, create budgets, and achieve economic independence.
EL Civics
Teach reading, writing and English language conversation within the context of learning about U.S. history and government, community resources, naturalization procedures and vital delivery systems including health care and public education.
Computer Instruction
Teach students the computer skills needed for success in the workplace and at home.
WIRED (Workforce Innovations in Regional Economic Development )
WIRED addresses the challenges of global competition by preparing America's workforce for high-skilled, high-wage job opportunities. Help Prepare older youth, ages 16 – 24, for employment in informational technology and retail services and to take the certification exams in both industries.
Bridges to Success
Prepare advanced students for success in post-secondary education and job training programs. Assist students in developing career and education plans, creating resumes, practicing interview techniques and applying for jobs and internships.


Non-Teaching Volunteer Opportunities
Reach Out and Read (ROR)
Read to children in pediatric clinics and join a national effort to make early literacy a part of pediatric primary care for low-income children ages 6 months to 5 years.
Book Drives
Collect gently used children’s books for ages 6 months to 5 years. Books will be distributed to Reach Out and Read pediatric clinics in Stamford and Greenwich.
Special Projects
   • Edit and manage publication of newsletter
   • Assist with community outreach and public relations
   • Organize fundraising activities
   • Coordinate special events including Student/Volunteer Recognition Night
      and Writers’ Café, our celebration of students’ writing.


Tutor Requirements
   • High school diploma or GED
   • Enjoy working with people from diverse backgrounds
   • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
   • Be able to attend an informative 15 hour tutor training workshop
   • Ability to tutor for one year
   • Ability to meet with students for a minimum of once per week for
      two hours each session at our main offices or community sites
